Method narrative

Core idea

Ferretti's premise is that most people try to think their way out of morning grogginess when they should move their way out of it. His routine replaces the usual coffee-and-scroll wake-up with a short burst of physical movement first, on the theory that alertness follows the body, not the other way around.
01

Why this approach

He points out that grogginess is partly a temperature and circulation problem, not purely a sleep-debt problem — body temperature is at its daily low around waking, and a few minutes of movement raises it faster than caffeine takes to metabolize. He treats the first ten minutes after waking as a physiological reset window: cold water on the face, a short burst of movement, then and only then coffee or a screen.

02

Order matters more than intensity

The specific movement barely matters, in his account — jumping jacks, a fast walk around the block, a few flights of stairs all work similarly. What matters is that it happens before any screen and before any sitting. He has seen people undermine an otherwise good routine simply by checking their phone first, which resets the grogginess clock because it invites lying back down mentally even while physically upright.

03

Why he avoids relying on caffeine timing

He is skeptical of caffeine-timing advice (delaying coffee 90 minutes, etc.) as a primary lever, not because it is wrong but because it asks people to exert willpower during the exact window when willpower is lowest. Movement, by contrast, needs no judgment call — it is a fixed action done immediately, before the mind is awake enough to negotiate.

04

The realistic failure mode

His most common failure mode among people who try this is skipping the movement on days they feel most tired, which is exactly the day it matters most. His fix is to shrink the movement to something almost too easy to refuse (a single minute) on the worst mornings, rather than skipping entirely.

Detailed principle notes

  • P1Vitality

    Move before you think

A short burst of movement immediately on waking, before any screen or sitting, resets alertness faster than caffeine.

Splash cold water on your face immediately after waking · 5 minutes of movement before touching your phone · Leave your phone in another room overnight

  • P2Discipline

Shrink it on the worst days

On the hardest mornings, do a 1-minute version instead of skipping the movement entirely.

On the hardest mornings, do just 1 minute of movement · Delay coffee until after the movement, not before
