Method narrative

Core idea

Cho argues that most people lose their morning to decisions made half-asleep — what to wear, what to check first, whether to snooze. She rebuilds the first hour so none of those decisions are made in a foggy state, by fixing the same handful of actions every day regardless of mood.
01

Why this approach

Her central claim is that willpower is highest right after waking and decays with every choice made before the day's real work starts. So the first hour should have as few choices as possible: light exposure, hydration, and a short written plan, all done in a fixed order.

02

Sleep as the other half

She treats the night before as part of the morning routine, not separate from it: a fixed wind-down window, screens away well before bed, and a consistent wake time even on weekends, since irregular wake times were, in her account, the single biggest wrecker of her mornings.

Detailed principle notes

  • P1Discipline

    Mornings execute. They don't decide.

Fix the first hour into a set order so no willpower is spent choosing what to do next.

Get sunlight within 30 minutes of waking · Drink a full glass of water before coffee · Write tomorrow's first task before closing the laptop

  • P2Recovery

    Protect the night before

Treat the wind-down window and wake time as part of the same system as the morning itself.

Screens off 30 minutes before bed · Wake at the same time, weekends included
