Method narrative
Core practice
Marcus Aurelius used private notes to rehearse how he wanted to meet the day: rise for the work of a human being, expect difficult people without becoming like them, and keep judgment focused on what his own response could govern. The method is not heroic productivity. It is a short daily orientation before comfort, friction, and impulse take over.
Rise toward a purpose
In Meditations he answers reluctance to leave bed by recalling that he is getting up to do human work. The borrowable practice is to name one useful act before seeking comfort, without requiring a fixed wake time.
Rehearse friction without resentment
He prepares for troublesome encounters in advance so surprise does not dictate his conduct. Anticipating one likely friction and choosing a response turns composure into a testable plan.
Govern the response, not the world
His notes repeatedly separate external events from the judgment made about them. A brief pause before reaction creates room to choose what is actually yours to do.
