Core practice
Curie's work on radioactivity was less a moment of discovery than years of repeated, unglamorous measurement. Processing tons of pitchblende ore down to fractions of a gram of usable material took steady, patient labor repeated for years before the result was visible to anyone else.
Keep the notebook honest
Her daily notebooks recorded readings and conditions in detail, whether or not a given day's numbers seemed meaningful yet. The record came first; the interpretation came later, built on entries that could be trusted because they were made in the moment rather than reconstructed from memory.
Treat conditions as fixed, not as an excuse
She worked for years in a converted shed with poor ventilation and minimal equipment. The lesson isn't the hardship itself — it's that she did not wait for a proper laboratory before starting; the work she could do under the conditions she had became the work that mattered.
Separate what you saw from what you believe
Measurement and interpretation were kept distinct: a reading was recorded as a reading, and what it might mean was reasoned about separately, later, often after many more readings had accumulated.
Persistence as the instrument
She is often paraphrased as saying that nothing in life is to be feared, only understood — and that understanding takes patience and confidence that the slow work is worth continuing.
